The MVEDD Team is always looking for ways to help communities reduce costs while better serving community members and agricultural producers. We have been looking into opportunities regarding food waste in the Mohawk Valley. There are many funding opportunities through New York State and Federal Agencies to fund programs aimed at reducing food waste through many avenues. We are reaching out to see if an initiative like this would be of interest to your community (group). If interested we would be able to provide technical assistance for your community to create a plan, leverage funding, harness community support, and support community goals.
A couple program examples for community programs with available funding are:
- Connecting Farm Surplus to Food Banks
- Creating Food Rescue Networks
- Food Donation Programs for Businesses (With Liability Protection)
- Harvest Gleaning Events – Going in after a harvest and gathering unmarketable produce for community use through volunteer labor while offering economic benefits to farmers.
- Community Composting Programs
- Community and School Gardens
- Backyard Composting Initiatives
- Food Scraps for Animal Feed
- Curbside Composting
- K-12 School Programs
- Energy Production through Food Waste
- Including other Community Wide Recycling Initiatives
