The former school is located at 7456 East Street in Newport (Herkimer County). The site is 1.10 acres and is occupied by a vacant 25,584 sq ft building that was constructed in 1928 and abandoned in 1990. The building is surrounded by paved parking, drive areas, and open grass areas. The building is dilapidated with trash and collapsing interior walls and ceilings. This site is identified by the Herkimer County Tax Assessor as SBL 094.47.2-8.2.
The redevelopment of this site will be determined with community input with the priority being the removal of the existing hazard and blight to the community.
The school is structurally unsound and contains asbestos throughout.
Representatives from MVEDD, EPA, Next, MVEDGE, HRP, and Weston & Sampson visited the site.

Great view from the hill! Once the building is down and new construction is done, this is going to make a heck of a view!
More broken windows on the side of the building.
The Village of Newport, MVEDD, Herkimer Next, and MV EDGE hosted a public meeting to discuss brownfields, the school site, and to solicit public opinion on the project and the redevelopment.
The following documents are available to the public to follow the Newport School Brownfield Remediation Project.
This project is funding with monies from the US EPA, MVEDD, and MVEDGE.
